Study in Germany for Free: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

StudiStep · Updated: June 2026 · ~6 min read

Thanks to tuition-free public universities and a strong economy, Germany is one of the most attractive destinations to study abroad. But how do you study in Germany for free? In this guide we explain the requirements, application, language, visa, blocked account and housing step by step.

Why is Germany free?

Most public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees; you only pay a small semester contribution. This makes it possible to complete a high-quality bachelor's degree without paying private tuition fees.

Basic requirements

The process step by step

  1. Choose program and university: Pick a program that fits your interests and language level.
  2. Prepare documents: Diploma, transcript, language certificate, passport; certified translation if required.
  3. Apply: Directly to the university or via platforms like uni-assist.
  4. Admission: You receive the admission letter (Zulassung) from the university.
  5. Visa & blocked account: Prepare the blocked account and other documents for the student visa.
  6. Housing: Arrange a dorm or student flat.
  7. Enrollment: Final registration (immatriculation) at the university in Germany.

What is a blocked account?

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a frozen bank account that proves you can support yourself in Germany for one year; a fixed amount can be withdrawn monthly. It is one of the key requirements for the visa. Since the amount can change yearly, verify it from official sources at the time of application.

Language: A1–A2 preparation

Level A1 is usually enough to start; you are expected to improve over time. At StudiStep, every registered participant gets access to the free A1–A2 German course, so you start well prepared.

Tip: Start the language early — it speeds up admission and the visa.

How does it work with StudiStep?

StudiStep supports you from application to enrollment: program choice, application, visa, housing and registration. There is also a notarized, transparent lottery in which winners receive 3 years of tuition-free study, the first 6 months of free housing, and the free A1–A2 language course.
